Hi

This is my first post in this forum, and I am already looking for some answers about something that I have heard a few times..

How true is it that you won’t really know what tango is all about until you visit Buenos Aires at least once? I’ve never been there and I am wondering what influence it would have in my tango dancing experience.

Thanks for any opinion, and happy new year,
Bill

Hello Bill

I do agree that visiting Buenos Aires helps tremendously to give one the 'feeling' for tango, of course this to different degrees for each person. These feelings come through the interaction with the portenos and one's presence in the culture of Bs As.
One sees and feels the wonderful side but as well the dark side of tango in Bs As, that is, the happy and sad, the nostalgic and hopeful, the joy and  pain..........and that is life.

Buenos Aires is a wonderful and unique city worth visiting....tango or not.  Hope you make it there and experience for yourself.

It helps a lot, but... The milongas nowadays are filled with tourists like us :-)
So, to absorve the 'feeling' for tango, you have to go to the wright milongas.

Oh I see.

Are the 'milongas' a lot different in Buenos Aires than in other countries?

Thank you.

Varandasi is right... We, tourists, are spoiling a bit the spirit of BA's milongas. Nevertheless, it is important to go there.
Not only because the level of dancing is good, not only because the music selection is excellent, not only because you get in touch with the soul of Buenos Aires and with the Portenos... To me, the most important thing is to open yourself to the essence of the dance: the connection with your partner, the connection with the music, the connection with the other people on the dance floor.
You want to be part of it, to be in harmony with it. You want to understand and possibly experience what is "milonguear bien"... and it's a lot different from "bailar bien". For all those reason and for hundreds of other you want to go there. But, please, come to BA with respect for the city, for its people, for the dance floor and for the other dancers on the dance floor.  Sonrisa

I remember when i first went to BA. From having practiced just another dance(i also danced salsa and swing at that time) it changed to having a new way to interpret life through very profound codes and values (some of them anachronistic I must admit). It is without doubt A LOT more than just a dance, and it admits multiple interpretations and ways of experiencing it. You MUST go to Buenos Aires to fully understand this, and as francesito said, do it with respect for their culture. Tango has been mistreated often, and nowadays it is also a big business in Argentina made-up for us, tourists.

francesito. Are you in BA now?
